It makes me incredibly sad to hear that teen suicide rates are going up. Kids have been increasingly led to believe, by themselves and others, that they are not worth a cent. It hurts my heart that kids are being fed lies like this. I personally have been friends with teens who wonder if they are really important and if their life really matters. Even kids who proclaim themselves to be Christians still commit this atrocity to themselves.
It is wrong to think you don’t matter. Some might think it is humble or something to think that way, but that is not true. It is actually the opposite. It is very self-focused. Of course, no one should think they are high and mighty and above all other human beings, that is just unreasonable and foolish, to say the least, but everyone should know they have worth and not pity themselves to the point of death. The problem is, they look in the wrong places and they are disappointed.
- Looking to beauty for worth is dangerous. There will be a day when the shroud of ugliness comes, and the worth disappears.
- Looking to things is dangerous. They wither away, they become uninteresting, or they are ripped away by the unexpected, and the worth disappears.
- Looking to people is dangerous. It might turn out that the boy likes someone else, the friends leave, someone is better at something, no one notices, the bullies are prevailing, or not a single person on earth cares, and the worth disappears.
Those are some of the most prominent things to look to for worth in our society. Some boys and girls sink into depression because they feel ugly. Some are embarrassed because they don’t have the latest iPhone. Kids are mentally hurt when one of their Instagram posts don’t get nearly enough likes to “show” that people are interested in them. You may have guessed that this is largely due to social media, and you would be correct.
Social media is something we did not have in the past. It successfully connects innocent youth to the lies of the world. When they see that the world boasts its worth in its own worldliness they think they must find their own worth there. The people who are endowed with beauty, things, and the interest of other people may be led astray to think that is what will forever give them their happiness, and they are prideful in it. Then there are those who do not have that, and they sink in sadness and feel they have no worth at all.
Luke 12:6-7 English Standard Version (ESV)
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
God loves you more than any human being ever could. So while beauty, things, and the care of people are blessings they are NOT definitions of worth! Those things are fleeting, if you turn to God for your worth He will never forsake you like the things of this world must. If you are blessed with those things, admit that they are indeed that, blessings, but turn away from them to find your worth. Rejoice if you do not have one or any of those worldly worths to tempt you because you will be able to see your worth in God clearer.
Romans 8:35 English Standard Version (ESV)
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Nothing can separate you from God’s love for you. This is where we should find our worth: in the only thing that will last forever, God’s love. You are valuable because God adores you. Use your time on earth to give glory to the only one who will ever give you true value, God. Do not end your life because you don’t find your worth in the things the world says you must. The world is lost.
1 John 3:1 English Standard Version (ESV)
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
It is like forever looking under your bed for something that is actually in the hands of your mother who is behind you. You will never find it. Don’t ignore her calling to you that she has it. You will be profoundly joyful when you decide to turn and realize you were looking for it in the wrong place all along.
1 John 4:16 English Standard Version (ESV)
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
Do you know anyone who struggles with worth? Don’t let them think that they don’t have any. Point them to the one who gives them worth. Love to you all! Bye, for now, everyone!
